Market Town Regional and National Awards ARCHIVE
The National Market Town Awards Winner 2006
The Haslemere Initiative – The Haslemere and Villages Rewards Scheme

Background
England has a rich heritage of small market towns. We must not, however underestimate the many and real challenges these towns face. The closures of bank branches; the concentration of many services in larger towns; and the growth of ‘out of town shopping’ have affected the ability of many small towns to act as centres for their rural hinterland.
Initiatives to regenerate town centres are now widespread in every region with local partnerships using a variety of funding streams to revitalise market towns. The government in its Rural Strategy 2004 reinforced the importance of market towns as sustainable rural communities and the focus for economic, social and environmental regeneration in rural areas. With new development work already underway across the regions, under the emerging Modernising Rural Delivery Frameworks, it is vital to show what can be achieved by such effective market town regeneration programmes and to share good practice.
Action for Market Towns working with the English Market Town Advisory Forum, Regional Development Agencies and Regional Market Towns Forums, is delighted to be able to promote the second year of the National Market Towns Award Scheme. This Award scheme gives recognition to the dedication and hard work that is already showing results across England and seeks to encourages others to follow these examples.
The Awards Scheme
We and our partners wish to recognise the excellent work being undertaken in the country’s market towns by looking for the most sustainable and innovative projects in a market town. Applications should be invited from each of the following four awards categories:
- Environment and Culture
- Social and Community
- Business and Economy
- Partnership and Strategic Working
One project from the four category winners will receive the additional accolade of the region’s “Best Market Town Project”. The winners of the four categories and the overall category will be written up and published as Best Practice case studies. Each Regional Best Market Town Project will go forward to the English Market Towns National Advisory Forum for judging. The winner will be announced at the Action for Market Towns National Annual Convention in Evesham and Pershore in September 2006.
