Background

Some two years ago, Action for Market Towns approached Jarrold Publishing with a view to launching a series of regional tourism guides to promote market towns as tourist destinations.  The idea was to encourage longer stays in towns, their neighbours and surrounding areas.

After stages of negotiation, Action for Market Towns and Jarrold Publishing found a willing partner in the Welland Sub-Regional Strategic Partnership and its 5 District Councils.

 

The Project

This unique product (launched in the 12 Welland market towns in September 2004) brings together partnership working at its best at town, district and county levels, with the Town Centre Managers working with the Tourism Officers to write their own copy (two pages have been allocated per town).

Through its Regional Network Coordinator, Action for Market Towns provided the management support, the Welland SSP through its District Councils provided the underwriting and Jarrolds the expertise and materials to implement the project.

2500 copies will be distributed to the towns to sell and approx 8000 copies will be sold through Jarrold Publishing's established distribution network nationwide.

 

The Future

Other counties around England are already considering the idea of a Food and Tourism Guide to promote their market towns.  This idea may be adapted to offer an online supporting version of a guide to also promote town events which are current and time sensitive.
